Pioneer Bible Translators’ Area Director for Africa spent 20+ years translating the Bible for an unreached people group in West Africa. Now that this project is complete, he focuses his attention on how to assist other language projects throughout the continent of Africa. Some of his projects involve doing exegetical checking, peer checking, and consultant checking of teammates’ work. Others focus on helping mother-tongue translators move their projects forward in the translation process. Still, others are in the dreaming stage as the team works to strategize, pray, and implement the necessary steps to reach the most hard to reach areas of Africa.
Rather than do all this work by himself, the Area Director put together a tight-knit team of North Americans based out of Italy who are laboring to help the Bible-less peoples receive the Word of God in the language they understand best. Through data entry, linguistic analysis, interlinearization, back translations, and linguistic/missiological survey, this team is working on the cutting edge of the translation movement.
During this year’s summer internship, our team in Italy will host checking workshops. During this time, exegetes will pour over the text of various Biblical books in 3-6 different languages. Interns will have the opportunity to observe, as well as participate, in detailed discussions surrounding the meaning of the Biblical text and wade through the challenges of communicating that meaning in a different language and culture. Interns will receive hands-on experience in the nitty-gritty of Bible translation, as well as enjoy interacting with our translators on these various projects.
